"Our point of departure was that CCISP would benefit from a study that went beyond a set of ‚system descriptions‛ of how the university of applied sciences sector is defined, structured, regulated, governed, funded and staffed in other (European) countries. What would add value to CCISP’s policy discussions would be analyses of the specific policy issues identified by CCISP (e.g. institutional mergers; distinct programme portfolios…) as well as analyses of the success or otherwise of national policies in other countries designed to achieve similar outcomes."

A presente publicação apresenta a caracterização do sistema de ensino superior, em mapas e em números, incluindo os dados do acesso e corresponde ao nº 4 da série Readings das publicações da Agência de Avaliação e Acreditação do Ensino Superior. Os números 5 e 6 da série, completam o presente volume, contendo os perfis institucionais das instituições de ensino superior público, no que diz respeito às mesmas variáveis aqui consideradas: número de ciclos de estudos, graus, vagas, estudantes inscritos e situação face à acreditação. O nº 5 diz respeito às universidades públicas e o nº 6 aos institutos politécnicos públicos.

Ministério da Ciência Tecnologia e Ensino Superior, OECD Thematic Review of Tertiary Education: Country Background Report - Portugal e respetivos anexos.

This report was prepared by the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education as input to the OECD Thematic Review of Tertiary Education. The document was prepared in response to guidelines the OECD prepared to all the participating countries. The guidelines encouraged the authors to canvass a breath of views and priorities on higher education issues and the present report had contributions from several research centres and governmental departments in Portugal.

European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education, Quality Assurance in Higher Education in Portugal: an assessment of the existing system and recommendation for a future system.

In 2005 the Portuguese government invited ENQA to appoint a panel of international experts with two interrelated tasks. First, to review the existing Portuguese quality assurance practices as conducted by the Portuguese National Council for the Evaluation of Higher Education, CNAVES. Secondly, to provide recommendations to the Portuguese government on the organisation, processes and methods of establishment of a national accreditation system which would meet the European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area.
